Located 2 hours North of Weipa or Archer River and 4 hours South of The Tip, the station is a well known and well-loved stop for visitors to the Cape these last 40 years – but it is also famous for its location – the start of the famous four-wheel-driving challenge, the Old Telegraph Line track, fondly known as the OTL. Infrastructure developments in the last 20 years included new self-contained room accommodations, campgrounds and new Tourist Park Bar and kitchen complex; the development of the Roadhouse which is open daily and offers fuel, takeaways, cold drinks and has a liquor licence.

Weipa is a coastal mining town in the local government area of Weipa Town in Queensland. It is the largest town on the Cape York Peninsula. It exists because of the enormous bauxite deposits along the coast. The township sits around 200km from Australia’s northern tip and about 800km from Cairns by road (or 500km by air). Despite the distance from other major cities, the Weipa township contains most of the facilities and conveniences of modern living. Rich in both natural beauty and cultural heritage, this region of the western Cape York Peninsula features stunning beaches, unspoiled wilderness and unrivalled fishing, making Weipa the ideal base to explore the Cape’s many attractions. Rough dirt road conditions have been foremost the reason the far northern Cape has been regarded as isolated and remote, but since 2002, road construction works have vastly improved conditions and modern 4wd vehicles travel the main route up the Cape, the Peninsula Development Road and then the Bamaga Road with comparative ease – and then they can chose the OTL, Frenchman’s and other 4wd skill and adventuring track favourites.
Cape York Peninsula is a large peninsula located in Far North Queensland, Australia. It is the largest unspoiled wilderness in northern Australia. The land is mostly flat and about half of the area is used for grazing cattle. Musgrave is a small township in Queensland, Australia. It is within the locality of Yarraden in the local government authority of the Shire of Cook. It bordered on the tribal lands of the Yetteneru to the east. Musgrave has a number of heritage-listed sites, including the former Musgrave Telegraph Station (now known as the Musgrave Roadhouse) which is located along the Peninsula Developmental Road. Completed in 1886, the former Musgrave Telegraph Station is an important remnant of the infrastructure that supported the overland Cape York Telegraph Line connecting Brisbane with the northern extremities of the colony of Queensland during the mid to late 1880s.
If you venture beyond the tip of Cape York, you’ll stumble upon a cluster of tropical islands where the lifestyle is laid back, the beaches are unspoiled and the fishing is second to none. You will visit Green Hill Fort Lookout where the now silent 6″ breach loading guns jut out menacingly over the islands’ main approaches and from here we look south to the mainland, west to the pearl farm and north to the main shipping lane. Green Hill Fort also houses a museum within the rooms and tunnels that once stored ammunition. The themed displays include maritime, pearling, township and military history. Disembark at the Japanese Pearl Divers Memorial located at T.I. cemetery on the northern side of the island to learn of the extraordinary and far reaching impact the pearling industry had in Torres Strait. Another important part of this stop is the monument commemorating Bernard Namok Senior who designed the Torres Strait Island Flag. The monument was unveiled on the flag’s 22nd anniversary, a memorial was unveiled at Thursday Island Cemetery.
